HTC invests in Beats by Dr. Dre, to the tune of $300 million
HTC scores a deal with “Beats,” sound quality of future smartphones now more promising.
HTC’s new partner could give them better speaker, or brand campaign.
Have you seen Lady Gaga’s legendary (not much of an overstatement) “Bad Romance” music video? If so, you must have noticed those funky triangle earphones attached on the poker face star’s ears in the tub scene. What about guys wearing the ultra-stylish piano-black headphones bearing the small letter “b” logo at the mall?
Yes, these professional-sounding consumer pieces of hardware will soon be finding their way inside HTC smartphones. According to the press release from HTC, the Taiwan-based company will be investing around $300 million dollars in Beats by Dr. Dre, and the smartphones with the Beats by Dre branding and sound technology will hit stores by the end of this year.
Little did we know about HP’s (Hewlett-Packard) plans on making a partnership with Beats that will give their laptops the ability to bear the infamous red ‘b’ logo, as well as inheriting the same high-quality audio processing hardware. HTC is probably taking the same approach to make their devices even more appealing to the music loving consumers, their phones may even boom in popularity due to the fact that the ‘Beats’ branding is already synonymous in the entertainment industry giving them massive boost in sales, as well as market share.
Korean electronics company ‘Samsung’ also took a similar approach which dates back in 2003, they partnered with the Danish audio-visual company Bang Olufsen for the development of the mobile ICEpower ASP (audio signal processor) dedicated for complete audio management in mobile devices. Almost 40% of Samsung mobile phones today are now using the ICEpower ASP, despite all the numerous attempts in advertising their music-centric mobile phones, the technology didn’t seem to affect sales the way Samsung have hoped. Bang Olufsen is a luxury brand, but only a small number of people know about the luxury brand.
“Beats by Dre” on the other hand is so heavily advertised, people from everywhere seem to know it–or at least have a bit of knowledge about the product (despite the not-so-average pricing). HTC is obviously aware of that, and focusing on multimedia playback is the right way to go, glasses free, HD 3D smartphones with beats audio?
